21 with a large ovarian cyst  Reply with quote

Hi,
I have a 16cm cyst attached to my left ovary, my gynaecologist said they will remove it by surgery and they said they will remove all or some of my ovary. I'm really worried as i'm 21 and haven't had any children and want to have some in the future, my gynaecologist said the don't encourage freezing eggs as i'll still have one ovary, how do i express my concerns to them? Also as its so big, it has been causing pain recently and and worried it could be something more problematic.

Hello,

My goodness that's a big sucker ! Unfortunately those things can grow pretty big and it's no wonder that it may be causing some pressure on your bladder etc.. I am sure you will be glad to be rid of it.

I don't think you need to worry about freezing your eggs because your other ovary contains millions of eggs so it will provide all of the necessary hormones that you need as well as eggs for your future family. Both my cousin and my sister in law had children with only one ovary. My cousin had to have her ovary removed because the cyst that she had torsed her ovary and they had to remove it. My sister in law had a very large 12 cm cyst and they had to remove the ovary as well as it had destroyed the ovarian tissue. I myself recently had my left ovary and tube removed due to a 9 cm cyst. My cousin went on to have two beautiful children and my sister in law had a wonderful baby boy (in her 30's). Frozen eggs are not guaranteed to get results (freezing eggs as opposed to embryos is a relatively new procedure and it is not thought to be as effective) whereas the eggs in your remaining ovary are healthy.

Although 16 cms is a very large cyst, it is unlikely to be anything dangerous at your age. Sometimes a normal follicular cyst (that contains our egg and bursts open every month) can grow out of proportion or sometimes the corpus luteal cyst (which is the shell of the follicular cyst after it has opened and released the egg) blocks off and begins to fill with fluid. At other times, we can get a cyst which is unrelated to normal functional cysts and is simply an abnormal cyst like the kind we can get anywhere. All of these can grow to be very large and I am sure that mine would have become as large as yours if they had not caught it early (mine was growing about a cm per year). If you are worried, you can always request to have a CA-125 blood test. This test is notoriously unreliable in premenopausal women unfortunately, but it can raise a red flag if there is anything wrong. If your growth is only fluid filled though, it is highly unlikely to be anything dangerous (radiologists can usually tell if something looks sinister).

All the best for the upcoming surgery. I am sure that you will bounce back with flying colours. I am 42 years old and my surgery went very well so at 21 yours should be a breeze. Take care of yourself and have everyone pamper you as much as possible.

Regards,

Estria

With all due respect, a 4.5 cm cyst has absolutely nothing to do with a 16 cm cyst and watching a 16 cm cyst while trying a natural remedy is a very bad idea. A huge cyst like this carries certain risks with it, including torsion of the ovary and cystic rupture. A 4.5 cm cyst may be nothing more than a simple functional cyst that may go away on its own. Usually doctors do not recommend removal of these unless they have persisted or grown over time.

Meetlibran, I have noticed that you have been trying to "sell" the natural remedy cure in a bunch of posts on these boards. Why don't you tell us exactly how you went about taking care of your cyst, in detail ? Referring us to a web-site that is selling information makes me wonder if you are trying to monopolize these boards for profit.

Hopefully I am wrong and you are just a well meaning individual who wants to share meaningful information with someone who is in need of it.

Take care and all the best.

Estria,

Thanks for keeping up with this forum! You're a God-send!!

For personal reasons, I haven't been out here in a while.

I'm banning meetlibran23. Let this be a warning to all those who post commercial "crap" out here. If you see any more spam out here that I miss, please let me know.

Thanks!!
Jen

Hi Jen,

I hope you are well.

I too was rather angry at someone who may be trying to take advantage of such a wonderful forum. It was these boards that kept me sane during a very difficult time in my life and the idea that someone might want to profit from others' vulnerability makes me sick. Kudos for taking action.

Take care and all the best.
