Blood Tests Every Woman with Ovarian Cysts Should Get  Reply with quote

OK, these are really just suggestions because I'm not a doctor, but I'd recommend that every woman [especially those who have an ovarian cyst] get the following blood tests done:

- Estradiol (estrogen)
- Progesterone
- Testosterone
- FSH (follicular stimulating hormone)
- LH (luteinizing hormone)
- Prolactin
- TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone)
- Free T4 (also thyroid which can be related)
- Fasting glucose (good to check at the same time for related problems)

It is possible to test your estrogen and progesterone tests through a saliva test, but experts disagree as to the validity of saliva tests, so if you do a saliva test, I would confirm it with a blood test.

* If you're post-menopausal and have an ovarian cyst, you should insist on a CA-125 blood test, too. Ladies, those of you with complex cysts should do the same. For the rest of you, just ask your doc if you should get that test done. The CA-125 is notorious for giving false positives (endometriosis) and false negatives, but it can be directional when coupled with a CT-scan or MRI.

If you haven't had your folic acid, B12 and iron levels checked, I'd do that, too.

You should also get your cholesterol checked (does have a possible correlation to ovarian cysts) and your BMI (weight has a correlation).

Of course, if you haven't had a full blood work-up recently, it's always good to occasionally have a CBC (complete blood count) done to make sure everything is in order.

i am new here and just found out i have an ovarian cyst that measures over 2cm on my right ovary. Me and my husband are currently trying to concieve our 4th child. It has been proven difficult for us and i am now wondering if it is because of this cyst. I do understand that woman ovuate from either the left or the right ovary every other month, but i seem to be having a hard time this time. Does any one know if cysts are the cause of my not concieving right away like i normally do? HELP!!!

I would check in with a Reproductive Endocrinologist if you are having secondary infertility. Since this was posted almost 6 months ago, I hope that you have been successful conceiving, and are also out of pain.

I had my daughter through IVF, and learned so much about the reproductive system and endocrinology that all goes into it. Honestly, I feel that if all women trying to conceive were on Metformin, there would be a lot more babies born! Simple fix for many, helpful in IVF for the rest. But most physicians will not prescribe it unless a glucose tolerance test comes back abnormal, so boo! Only an RE really knows the value of that, and can help with a lot of these issues. Unfortunately I can't go back and see mine, as all he does is IVF and IUI, not seeing patients for normal GYN type stuff.

Good luck!
