Hello,

Pain meds will not work for this kind of pain. Ibuprofen will (or a strong anti inflammatory like Naproxen). Cox 1 and 2 inhibitors like Advil (ibuprofen) go after the prostaglandins in the blood that are causing the pain. This is why they are extremely effective for this.

Even after my surgery for the removal of my 9 cm ovarian cyst, left ovary and tube, it was the anti inflammatory that took care of the pain.

You need the right kind of meds for the type of pain you are experiencing or it won't take away your discomfort. Along with the ibuprofen, you can use a heating pad or sit in a warm bath. All of these things help and when I am ovulating every month (a very painful experience) this always works.

Give this a try and see if it works for you too.

Regards,

Estria

I have to possibly disagree. I haven't been prescribed anything yet, but with the excrutiating pain I've had to deal with I will say that one medicine (prescribed for another condition) was helpful, although didn't take all the pain away and didn't do a lot for the following two days that my abdomen felt like a bomb had gone off. he one was Darvocet, and it did help better than over-the-counter Ibuprofen or Naproxen alone. I've also read an article by a physician that studies ovarian cysts, and he had this to say:

-Ovarian Cyst ruptures are a frequent cause of ER visits

-Women have often described the pain as similar or worse than childbirth (I can agree with that one after having my daughter)

-Physicians tend to unfortunately not see the severity of the issue and not medicate or warn the patient that it can be life threatening with a risk of hemmorhage

- Fentynal (a man-made opioid pain reliever) is a candidate Rx for this kind of extreme sudden onset pain.

I'm not sure where I read this, I think I was searching "ovarian cyst" or "ovarian cyst rupture" on Yahoo or Google and came across the article. I hope this helps. I have the same problem, and it is why I'm switching OB/GYN's.

Poor Treatment  Reply with quote

I have just had a 6cm Dermoid Cyst removed plus my ovary and Fallopian tube removed on left hand side. My treatment up until the acyually operation has been appalling. I had been in constant pain for six months without pain meds, nothing worked for the pain not even ibrobufen. My Gynae was never willing to discuss anything with me and I got the impression he thought I was making the pain up. Two operation dates got cancelled! one was for the 22nd December, I went to my own doctor in tears of pain and frustration and all he said was ' At least you won't be in for Christmas' I said I couldn't care less whether I went in on Christmas day I want the bloody thing out. He said it would probably only another couple of weeks and it wouldn't be long. I was crying but he didn't say anything. When I finally had op done it was January 19th. I am still in a little discomfort and have to go back to doctors on Tuesday due to the fact that I haven't stopped bleeding since the op. But it's a relief it's gone. I seriously don't think Ovarian Cysts get treated quickly enough and something needs to get done about it. Myself personally is going to take it further.

Hello ladies,

I agree with both of you that ovarian cysts are not taken seriously enough. I think the reason for this is that they are common and have very rarely resulted in death. This means that pain is not taken very seriously.

However, when it comes to pain control, I still insist that something that goes after the prostaglandins is more effective than something that works on the brain. Many people are under the misconception that over the counter ibuprofen or other stronger anti inflammatories such as Naproxen are somehow not as strong as opioids and this is absolutely NOT true. They each work differently and you need to take the right kind of pain med for the type of pain that you have. Prostaglandins are chemicals released into the blood that cause pain and ibuprofen or other Cox 1 and Cox 2 inhibitors are made to prevent this. The only problem with this med is that it should ideally be taken at the first sign of pain and not when the pain is in full force. The med is more effective if taken immediately because it helps to prevent the body from producing the prostaglandins in the first place. Therefore, if one is prone to ruptured cysts, she should take the med at the first inkling of trouble. I have cysts that rupture almost every single month and I usually can feel the trouble starting. I guess I am fortunate that my pain builds up until the ovary tears, the cyst burst open and the real pain begins.

I personally have tried both fentanyl and even demerol for pain and not only do I not like the side effects, but I don't like the potential for becoming dependent on such a drug since it works on the brain and can become addictive. Although ibuprofens and other anti inflammatories are not totally benign either, I prefer to take my chances with these for the times that I need them. I find that they are extremely effective. Obviously if they are not working for you, you must try something else. Every woman is different.

Oh and Kara !

Congratulations on finally getting the darn operation done. Thank goodness. The discomfort from the operation will go away so just be patient. I am in total agreement that you should seek out another doctor. Anyone who is as obviously unsympathetic as the doctor that you have should definitely not be graced with the presence of any patient. A doctor has to not only be good technically, he or she must also be a good listener and show sympathy and understanding. Believe me, someone like that would only understand what you are going through if he had a gigantic marble in one of his testicles.

There is definitely a double standard in medicine ladies and the only way we can change that is to stop seeing doctors who are uncaring. This does not necessarily mean to see only women as there are female gynes who can be just as bad. If the doctor causes more frustration than the medical condition itself, then it's time to pack your bags and go see someone else.

Anyway, I hope you are recovering nicely. Take it easy and spoil yourself for a while until your body recovers. Even though it took me officially one week to recover from my laparoscopy to remove ovary and tube, it still was a couple of months before I really felt like my old self. Give yourself the time to heal and be patient. All the best.
